This is a list of publishers that accept unsolicited manuscript submissions for adults' and\or childrens' novels\novellas\short story collections. - C. A. Broadribb.

Publishing Novels, Novellas and Short Story Collections

These are selected lists of publishers that accept unsolicited manuscript submissions\queries for adults' and\or children's novels\novellas\short story collections, without requiring the writer to pay anything for publication. The lists are intended for Australians, however, most publishers are open to submissions from writers of other nationalities too. They will accept submissions from people of all ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles and are willing to consider writers who haven't published a book before. Some publishers make a distinction between 'commercial' (genre) and 'literary' (non-genre) fiction and have restrictions. (Note that when people refer to literary competitions or literary agents, they are not making any distinction between genre and non-genre fiction.) A publisher can have a number of imprints, i.e. trade names/brand names, to publish particular genres or to target particular types of readers. Sometimes, it's the result of one publishing business having merged with or taken over another. Some publishers will accept submissions at any time while others are open at various times during the year.

Publishers generally expect a cover letter, synopsis, and (if it's a submission rather than just a query) sample chapters from your manuscript or the whole document. They may ask about your intended audience and comparision titles from other authors in the market. It's also helpful if you can show proof of your writing skills by listing short stories or previous books that you've published, prizes that you've won in literary competitions, writing residencies that you've obtained or relevant qualifications. The publishers' websites explain what you need to provide when making a submission: the information is often found in the 'contact' or 'about us' section or from a link at the top or bottom of the home page. Note that a publisher can take many weeks or months to respond, and some will respond only if they're interested in further considering your manuscript. Some publishers are happy for you to submit your manuscript elsewhere in the meantime ('simultaneous submission') but others expect an exclusive submission.

Most publishers won't accept material created using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) because they're interested in your experience, imagination, thoughts, feelings etc and want to see your personal writing style rather than a homogenized one from a computer program. They appreciate writing on which you've spent time, effort and skill.

If you have a manuscript accepted by a publisher, they'll send you a contract, ask for certain publication rights and pay you royalties on copies of your book that they sell.

You can self-publish books instead of using a publisher. It generally costs a lot, you might have to work on formatting and design, and then after having the books printed you have to try to market them and distribute them. A publisher can do all that for you without charging you anything, and can pursue other avenues too such as translations. Having a manuscript accepted by a publisher also proves your writing skills more than self-publishing does.

I'm not affiliated with any of these publishers and can't guarantee the accuracy of the information so please do your own research before submitting anything. The Writer Beware website is a good place to check for potential problems\scams.

Digital-first publishing

The following publishers release novels\novellas\short story anthologies as e-books for sale online through their own website and\or other websites. Some also offer print versions via print-on-demand (POD) or limited print runs of successful titles, and some offer audiobooks.

If you have a manuscript accepted by a publisher, they'll send you a contract, ask for certain publication rights and pay you royalties on copies of your book that they sell. E-books sell at much lower prices than printed books but publishers pay a much higher percentage of the sale price as royalties.

You can easily self-publish content as e-books yourself, for free, and get them listed in online retailers, however, if you use a publisher, they can help with editing, cover design and marketing, and might also pursue other avenues for you such as translations. Having a manuscript accepted by a publisher also proves your writing skills more than self-publishing does.
